With college football underway and college basketball season tipping off in November,it’s time forCBJ’s yearly look at the salaries paid to coaches in the UNC System.
It’s important to note that only what the university pays them is included. The total compensation for many coaches at the system’s biggest programs is likely much higher; often additional funds come from private sources.
For example,USA Todayrecently released its list of the highest college football coaching salaries. Alabama’s Nick Saban topped that list of the highest-paid coaches in the sport, earning about $10.7 million this season, followed by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney at $10.5 million and Georgia’s Kirby Smart at $10.25 million.
In February, ESPN reported that both UNC’sMack Brownand N.C. State’sDave Doerenextended their contracts through the 2026 season and are now scheduled to each earn $5 million per season, up from $3.5 million in their previous contracts.
However, in the UNC System database, Doeren is the highest-paid coach with a reported salary of $2.4 million. Brown is seventh with a base salary of $900,000.Mike Houston, East Carolina’s head football coach, ranks No. 2 with a base salary of $1.4 million, followed closely byKevin Keatts, N.C. State’s head men’s basketball coach, at $1.38 million.
The top-paid coach for the Charlotte 49ers isWill Healy, head football coach. His base salary is $518,000, up 3% from 2021.Ron Sanchez, head coach of the men’s basketball team, has a base salary of $461,000.

In August 2022, after leading UNC to the 2022 national championship game, Davis signed a six-year contract extension worth around $16.7 million. Davis has a career record of 74-29 overall across three seasons, including a 43-17 mark in the ACC. UNC is the top seed in the 2024 ACC Tournament.
The estimated total pay range for a Assistant Coach at The University of North Carolina System is $33K–$53K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay.
Biff Poggi agreed to a five-year contract last year with a base salary of $500,000 per year. He made $1 million in total pay in 2023, according to USA Today.
Women's basketball coach Cara Consuegra is the second highest paid coach at Charlotte, with a base salary of $269,100. She is the second highest-paid female coach in the UNC system, behind UNC's women's basketball coach Courtney Banghart. Banghart earns a base salary of $310,000.
