4 I Chronicle-Tribune, Marion, Indiana Thursday, April 9, 1987 Capone's old up for sale CHICAGO (AP) debris in the Lexington Hotel is waist high after years of neglect, but the landmark haunt of gangster Al Capone is on the market at an asking price of $1.3 million. The 10-story, 400-room Lexington was an opulent hotel when it opened in 1893. President Grover Cleveland honeymooned there, and the upper crust danced on the lavish ballroom's tile floors. Then during Prohibition, Capone shifted the base for his criminal empire to the Lexington from the Metropole Hotel across the street. Capone used the fourth and fifth floors as his headquarters from 1928 until 1932, when federal authorities found him a new home: Alcatraz.
The building later became: the New Michigan Hotel, then a bordello, and finally a seedy residential hotel. It was closed in 1900.
